The unending trauma of war | DW Documentary

Lidija Zelović grew up in Sarajevo before the war forced her to flee with her family to The Netherlands. When she returns, after two decades, as a filmmaker, she discovers that the war rages on in people’s minds.

Zelović, who has also worked as a television journalist, grows increasingly frustrated as she is confronted by old hatreds and new nationalist aggression. She also learns that members of her family were perpetrators as well as victims in the war: Her cousin was a sniper involved in deadly ambushes. What begins as an effort to reconcile herself with the past becomes a journey through a minefield.

While shooting, Zelović discovers that the real war is the one going on inside people, including herself.
